LOOKING BACK
As the calendar turns, it sure seems to me that Barack Obama is doing everything in his power to make things as difficult as possible for Donald Trump. There’s the unprecedented land grab Obama just pulled off in Utah. Then there’s the UN resolution condemning Israel, which the Obama administration did nothing to stop, which has emboldened and mobilized Israel’s enemies and set the stage for some very difficult foreign policy decisions for the Trump administration. (I focus on this in my latest YouTube program (#15) which I have just posted.) Then there’s Obama’s decision to come down hard (about 18 months too late) on Russia for its hacking activities.
These and a host of other nefarious activities by Obama have the effect of stirring up a hornet’s nest and tossing it into the Oval Office on January 20th while shouting, “Good luck, sucker.” None of this should surprise us, so let’s refocus.
SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE
What Does God Want in 2017?
As 2016 comes to a close, we look forward to the new year for a variety of reasons. Some of us are hopeful that our nation can get back on track and that those who seek our destruction will be defeated or held in check. We hope our personal lives will be more fulfilling, that we will enjoy good health, great relationships with our friends and family members, and that God will bless us with fruitful rewards for our labors.
In many ways, we all want the same things, but if we’re growing spiritually, we also know that want we want isn’t what we should be seeking. God wants us to see the world through His eyes, focusing on the things that are most important to Him. He has also assured us that if we seek His kingdom and His righteousness, we will take care of all our needs.
Therefore, we need to take a different approach to 2017 if we are serious about living a life of submission to our Lord. It’s going to take intentionality, since change doesn’t happen by itself. Take a moment and ask God to reveal the change He wants from you. Perhaps it’s one of attitude or priorities. Maybe our love has been misplaced. I am convinced that what He really wants us to do is simply identify and confess the sin, whatever it may be, that so easily derails us, give it to Him, and let Him bring about the necessary changes in us.
It’s actually a freeing transaction and one that is very biblical. I’m convinced it’s the meaning behind Isaiah 30:15:
In repentance and rest you shall be saved.
In quietness and trust is your strength.
God is waiting for us to repent and then rest in the knowledge that He will take it from here, quietly trusting in His power to make the necessary changes. Instead of saying, “Lord, take this desire from me,” Confess the sin that is causing the problem and rest in His goodness. What a concept!
May 2017 bring you into a more intimate relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
