SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE

As I am writing this, I have just returned from the first of many visits to a prison in South Carolina. Three other men and I will be helping a selected group of men become facilitators in teaching the classic study, Experiencing God. God is doing a great work in the lives of these ten men (inmates). They have all received Christ and as they told their stories, it was clear that they were serious about their spiritual walk.

So what does this have to do with a biblical perspective on the news? In my opinion, a lot. What I witnessed earlier today is a reminder that God is at work everywhere, and especially in this prison. I have often told the story of the underground church in China which considers that no man is worthy of becoming a pastor unless he has spent at least three years in prison. America has its seminaries, but China grows its spiritual leaders in prison. Well, God also uses prison to equip his leaders in America. I saw it firsthand, and I feel honored to have the privilege of helping a select group over the next twelve weeks.

My point is that God is still at work. Regardless of what the news seems to imply, my two hours with these men this morning made all the news seem meaningless. At this point in time, these ten men are to be the focus of my prayers much more than the condition of the world. Jesus gave us our marching orders, which include growing His kingdom by growing His children and helping those in need.

For me, God opened this door and made it crystal clear that He wanted me to walk through it. I encourage you to see where God may be leading you. Perhaps He wants to change your focus as He did mine.
