SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE

Deadly Ideas

Ideas have consequences, and the consequences of ideas that deny truth can be deadly. Liberalism thrives on truth-denying ideas. The state of Minnesota is a case in point. This traditionally blueconsequences liberal state gave us our first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison (who was sworn in on a Koran) and senator Al Franken.

This week’s news includes a story of a Somali refugee who was voted into office in Minnesota’s State Capitol in 2016.  Here’s how former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak described thirty-four-year-old Ilhan Omar:

“From a refugee camp to the State Capitol with intelligence and insight. This is a wonderful story to tell as Americans, and a great source of pride for the state of Minnesota’s open arms.”

refugees middle eastWhile welcoming refugees into our country may seem like the “American” thing to do, it will surely undermine everything we Americans value if we fail to consider the beliefs of those we are welcoming. As the second article above explains, this “rising star” in Minnesota politics believes that jihad murderers should be eligible for payments from life insurance policies.

Let that sink in for a moment. The blue state of Minnesota is proud of someone who believes in rewarding those who engage in Islamic jihad against Americans. It doesn’t take much to imagine what else she believes that would, to put it mildly, not be in our best interests.

The idea that a Muslim Somali refugee would automatically be good for America denies the truth that would be evident to anyone who knows anything about Islam. Considering how far Keith Ellison has risen in the ranks of the Democratic party, it’s clear that those on the left have become blind to the truth and have chosen to embrace a lie.

This should serve as a warning for followers of Jesus Christ. It is likely that somewhere along the line we too have chosen to believe a lie, and that lie is dragging us down, or at least, preventing ustruth lies from living the joyful, victorious life we desire. The father of lies knows our weaknesses and will offer all sorts of enticements that feed our fleshly desires. It’s worth taking some time alone with God and asking Him to reveal the lie that we have embraced. What truth-denying idea have we embraced without realizing it?

Clearly, Satan doesn’t want us to understand that our old self was crucified along with Christ, thus eradicating our “body of sin” (See Rom. 6:6). Neither does he want us to embrace our new identity as children of God and heirs to the kingdom. Whatever the lie we have embraced, the result is likely the same: we believe that Jesus Christ is not sufficient to meet our needs. We need something more, and the desire to have it will consume us if we let it.

contentThe world promotes dissatisfaction with nearly everything about our lives. We are bombarded with solutions for what we need to make life better. Hidden behind it all is a subtle message of discontentment with what we have. However, if our contentment comes from our relationship with Jesus Christ, nothing more is needed, and nothing can take away what we have.

This kind of contentment frees us to enjoy everything that God has already given us instead of focusing on what we think we need.

Let’s get rid of those deadly ideas and embrace the simple truth of the sufficiency of Christ.
