SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE

Praying for our Persecuted Brothers and Sisters

The article about the incredible number of Christians who died because of their faith should make us stop and consider just how difficult it is for believers in other parts of the world. We inPrisoner photo America take for granted what others give their lives for. I read reports nearly every day of the persecution, suffering, and dangers that have become the “normal Christian life” to millions around the world.

We should try to put ourselves in their place. How would we respond under their circumstances? Would we be as bold? How hard would we work to keep meeting with our brothers and sisters in the faith when getting caught could get us thrown in prison? How open would we be about our faith?

persecutionThere’s a good reason why this exercise is necessary. It’s the only way we can pray effectively for them. If you were in their situation, how would you want other Christians to be praying for you? Even better, how do you think Jesus wants you to pray for them? It’s sad to realize how much they need our prayers and how few Christians pray daily for them. We must not let “out of sight, out of mind” keep us from our duty to lift them up daily. They desperately need our prayers. We have the power to influence lives all over the world. It’s time to utilize that power on behalf of the suffering members of the Church.

In a previous article, I wrote about prayer as a partnership. It may be helpful in seeing prayer in a new light. Another article offers a new perspective in knowing how to pray for persecuted believers. It will take you into a deeper understanding of their unique spiritual needs. Let’s make praying for them a part of our daily prayer life. Christ will be pleased and our persecuted brothers and sisters will be uplifted. Isn’t this the way the Church is supposed to operate?
