We already have the best Valentine’s Day gift we could ever receive.

IT’S WORTH CONSIDERING

valentines day presentThis is Valentine’s Day, the day of hearts and expressions of love. We all have different reactions to this day. Some love it. Some hate it. It all depends on your situation. Today, I’d like to remind us all of the most special “Valentine’s Day” gift we’ve ever received. It is a love letter that puts all others to shame. Unfortunately, most of us have never really appreciated the depth of sentiment behind it or the intrinsic value within it.

I am referring, of course, to the Word of God- the Bible. Whether we are regular studiers of it, occasional readers, or nonchalant “spectators,” I can guarantee that there’s more to it that we ever imagined. I can say this with assurance because I am personally going through a renewed appreciation and passion for it. I am seeing things I never say before and going deeper into the heart of God than I have ever gone before.

I have been reminded of how precious the Word is to those on the other side of the world- those who risk their lives to carry even a small portion of it with them. The Chinese Underground Church consists of 200,000,000 dedicated believers who would give anything to obtain what we in America take for granted.

We are triune beings. We are part, body, part soul, and part spirit. If any part is hurting, we are incomplete and ineffective. For those who have never been born again, your spirit is dead, waiting an “awakening.” For those who belong to Christ, our spirits are alive and we are capable of living a fulfilled life. Just as the Spirit within us gives us insight into the Word, increased time in the Word strengthens the Spirit within us.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing;

The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life (John 6:63).

That’s when life really gets exciting- when we are propelled by Holy Spirit power directly in the heart of God’s will for us. The bottom line- God’s Word is absolutely necessary for life, especially the abundant life Christ wants for us (See John 10:10).

 AS I SEE IT

The Lord has been reminding me of some familiar verses:

O taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8).

They [the Words of God] are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them, Thy servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward (Psalm 19:10-11).

I think too many of us treat the Word of God like a menu at a fine restaurant. We’re very familiar with the menu. We look it over often. We have even memorized parts of it. We’ve even ordered some items that looked enticing to us. The problem is that we’ve never sunk our teeth into that filet mignon. We’ve never really tasted it, so we don’t really know how good it is. We just admire it as it sits on our plate. We can describe how it looks and even how it smells, but that’s about it.

We all like rewards, and God knows that. The Bible talks a lot about rewards, both here on earth and in heaven. In the last verse above, it talks about “great rewards.” I don’t know about you, but that sounds good to me. Let’s vow together to stop admiring God’s Word and start tasting its goodness. It’s sweeter that a box of Valentine chocolates and a lot less fattening. Who knows what reward God may have for us?
