SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE

This Little Light of Mine

This week’s news shows that we have come to the place where perversion is celebrated, barbarism is defended, and insanity is applauded. Otherwise, all is well. Oh, there’s that pesky North Korean dictator who’s not afraid to start WW III, but now that Republicans control all three branches of our government, things will turn around. Yeah right.

We seem to have crossed the point of no return in many important areas. The downward spiral we’re on is gaining momentum. Yes, there have been some positive changes. The economy, which is always America’s first concern, is improving. Our military is being strengthened, and we have a president who is willing to stand up to the globalists and all those whose agendas are not in America’s best interests.

¬†Let’s take a quick back in time to try to gain some perspective. When Alexis de Tocqueville began his study of Democracy in America in 1831, he found that the American people were at their core, good, self-reliant people who held to their belief in God and led lives reflective of the virtues taught in their churches. Remember, America had only a half century of experience as a democracy (Democratic Republic).

The word that stuck out to me in the French aristocrat’s assessment of Americans and their experiment with democracy was “virtuous.” It’s a word we don’t hear much these days. It means good, righteous, worthy, honorable and moral. That’s what he saw in the American people. He wasn’t talking about one particular party or select group of elites. He was describing the average American. This “average American” was brought up in a home where the messages preached in their church were reinforced in the home by their parents. The result was a virtuous society.

Make a quick review of the titles of this week’s articles. Not much qualifies as virtuous. Oh, the great and heartwarming stories are out there, and people love reading them, but by and large, America has become addicted to trash. Virtue is to be mocked. Fortunately, not all Americans have bought into the filth, but those with the most influence have. This, of course is old news. I’m simply stating the obvious.

So, what can we do? We can’t change society, but we can “let our little light shine” in such a way that those in our sphere of influence will see something they are secretly longing for. We can be the embodiment of virtue that is so rare these days. We can be that word of encouragement and hope to those who are hurting. Our nation’s moral turpitude is no excuse for our apathetic resignation.

More than ever, America needs examples of what we once were. We can have a huge impact on those around us if we will stop complaining about how bad things are and do our part to make things better where we have been placed. It’s time to let our little light shine.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

These notices actually appeared in church bulletins:

– This evening at 7 p.m. there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.

– Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 a.m. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B.S. is done.

– The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.
