SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE

Living in Community

¬†This week’s news reminded us that insanity, depravity, and hypocrisy are alive and well, but so is God and His work. That’s where we need to keep our focus. Every week the stories get more bizarre and disgusting, but this shouldn’t surprise us. I know I say this a lot, but we need to be reminded. This is new territory with a lot of distractions, and we need to stay focused. Jesus told us what was coming, and now it’s here.

This week I have been reminded of the need to set our focus on living in community. It’s so easy to think of our own spiritual lives, our own personal journey, our own struggles, etc. But John 3:16 reminds us that God so loved the world, not just us. His goal is the redemption of humanity and we are to understand that we have a role in that bigger plan.

When we’re too focused on ourselves and our own spiritual journey, we make ourselves unusable to God as part of His greater agenda. He wants us to see ourselves as part of something bigger than ourselves. This doesn’t happen automatically. We really have to work at this since everything in society, including most Christian books, stress how you can grow as an individual. Few stress the undeniable fact that Christ’s desire is that we may become one, not only us individually with the godhead, but us with one another.

Our ultimate community is the Bride of Christ, and being a part of this is a big deal. The Bride consists of a lot of individuals coming together for a common purpose-the culmination of Christ’s “love affair” with His Church. We’ve all experienced the joy of being part of something that was meaningful. A team, a play, an intimate small group.

For me, my prison ministry has enabled me to feel a part of something that brings joy and thrills my heart. The relationships I have formed with my teammates and inmates is precious. It has allowed me to experience community in a powerful way. I see it as a tiny example of what Christ wants His bride to be like-a community so united that it sees itself as one body.

I encourage you to ask God to give you an appreciation for the value of living in community. It will change the way you view yourself and others. It will help you stay focused on the right things as the world does its thing. We’re not to be “of this world,” so let’s not let it conform us into its mold or distract us from our mission. Let this be a reminder that it’s not about us. It’s about God and His love for mankind, and He doesn’t want His most precious creation to live in isolation. He wants us to live in community.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

There was a bit of confusion at the supermarket this morning. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the cashier said, “Strip down facing me.” Making a mental note to complain to my congressman about Homeland Security running amok, I did just as she had instructed.

When the hysterical shrieking and security alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future.
