SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE

iStock_000003062610SmallIn Ephesians 1:22 Paul says that God put everything in subjection under the feet of Jesus and gave Him as head over all things to the church. Oh, if we would start living in light of this powerful truth. Everything, including whatever is happening in our world, is under the authority of Christ. While Satan seems to be in control, the truth is that he has whatever power he has because Jesus has allowed him to have it…for now. Jesus has the real authority and power over everything. For the moment, Satan’s current influence on the world stage shows how bad things can be when man refuses to submit to the One True God.

My point, however, is that Jesus, with all His authority…over everything…has been given to the church. Let that sink in for a minute. The church, the Body of Christ, has been given a leader who currently has authority over all things, and that includes all His enemies who are automatically enemies of the church. Christ said He would build His church and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. So, what’s gone wrong. Why is the church, for the most part, presently so weak, especially here in America?

I don’t want to get into all the reasons for our weakness. I’ve dealt with this in other articles. I want us to thinkcrucifixion 2 about why good, Bible-believing churches are too often on the defensive or not even in the battle. In case you haven’t noticed, the war against Christianity is on, and things are rapidly heating up. The verse about the gates of hell assumes that the church has taken the offensive and has gone after the enemy with all the fury of God.

Could it be that we don’t appreciate what we’ve been given? All authority has been given to us in the person of the Lord Jesus, and we act like we are powerless. I think Satan’s deceptive strategies have gotten to us more than we would like to admit. By our actions, it seems that we actually believe our power is limited. Our pastors should be calling out sin wherever it is, and doing so under the power of Christ. Members of the flock should be taking the same initiative. But since Christ was and is full of grace and truth, we must extend grace with the same power.

Isn’t it time the church starts acting like the church and utilizing the power it has? If the world is getting its perception of Jesus through us, shouldn’t we be presenting a more accurate picture? Regardless of who wins the next presidential election, things don’t look good, but this world isn’t our real home. While we’re here, however, we are ambassadors for Christ, so let’s start taking our calling seriously.
