Putting on Christ every morning is the key to success + weekly news
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Since believers have been given new life (the life of Christ Himself in us), we must make sure we put on that new life every morning just as we put on our clothes (Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10). Otherwise, we may find ourselves relying on our natural virtues—those areas where we feel confident and successful. This tendency becomes evident when we discover that some famous athlete or actor has become a Christian. We assume that their worldly success or popularity will allow them to reach millions with the gospel.
Success as a Hindrance
While this may give them a platform, their previous success may be the greatest hindrance to their spiritual growth and the power of their new message. The new life God has implanted in them develops its own virtues—those of Christ. The ways and successes of the world must be destroyed, not rebranded. The more successful they had been, the harder it will be for them to realize that God must destroy their confidence in their natural virtues and successes. God will do whatever it takes to bring them to the place where their confidence is completely in Christ—their new life.
The same is true for us. Pay attention to how God will destroy your confidence in your own natural strengths. Of course, virtues in themselves are a good thing and they bring joy to us and others. In the spiritual realm, however, different rules apply. The natural can be turned into the spiritual only through sacrifice. This is what Romans 12:1 is all about. We are to offer our bodies (the home of our natural virtues) as living sacrifices so we will stop placing our confidence in them. If we don’t sacrifice the natural to the spiritual, the natural life inherited from Adam will fight against the new life of Christ in us.
We Can Do Nothing
We refuse to acknowledge that apart from Christ, we can do nothing (John 15:5) every time we trust in ourselves and our perceived strengths. When we fail to experience the abundant life Jesus promised, we assume that our experience must be as good as it gets. This brings disillusionment and disappointment. Until we recognize that we are the problem, the cycle of frustration will continue.
This can be corrected the easy way or the hard way. We can voluntarily deny ourselves, take up our cross, and give in to our new life, or God will be forced to bring us to the end or ourselves through a process called brokenness. Once our self-confidence has finally been shattered, Jesus will be free to live His life through us.
Put on Christ
Since the flesh is always with us clamoring for attention and recognition, we must take steps to get off on the right foot every morning. Just as we must put on our spiritual armor (Eph. 6:10-16), we must put on Christ. This mental exercise will put the flesh on notice that it has been replaced. You are now dressed for success.
