Power requires brokenness + weekly news
BROKEN FOR HIM
We all want the power of the Holy Spirit working in us, but we are seldom prepared for what must happen first. When Jesus first called Peter to follow Him, he did so without hesitation. He was so attracted to Jesus that it seemed like the right thing to do, and he was ready to follow Him anywhere. Then came the day when Peter denied Jesus with oaths and curses not once, but three times. Bold and confident Peter became crushed and broken-hearted Peter.
Peter was Changed
Peter had discovered that he wasn’t the man he thought he was. He had never imagined he would ever do such a thing. His self-sufficiency had suddenly come to an end. When he saw what really dwelled within him, his life was changed forever. He was finally ready to receive God’s power. When the Holy Spirit fell upon those in the house at Pentecost, Peter’s message to the crowd came with such power that three thousand people were saved. From that day on, the Lord used Peter in ways he never could have imagined. Before God could use Peter, He had to break him of all his self-sufficiency. He had to show him the ugly truth of what would happen if he kept trusting in himself.
Hijacked by the Flesh
Without brokenness, the gifts of the Spirit (or their counterfeits) will be hijacked by the flesh to bring attention to the person and not to God. I have witnessed what happens when the power of the Holy Spirit is sought, but without brokenness. A counterfeit experience will empower the flesh producing an attitude bearing little resemblance to the fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22-23.
I believe that in the coming days, God will use persecution to break His children who are still relying on the flesh—those seeking recognition and self-gratification. Some will eventually submit. Others will not. Those who have already undergone the painful process, perhaps more than once, will be the ones God will use to lead others to victory as the battle intensifies. These will be the ones with discernment and humility, two absolute necessities in the days ahead.
Divisions will Happen
Jesus warned us that in the last of the last days, divisions will form within families and churches. I believe that a refusal to be broken will be the root cause of these divisions between believers. Without complete submission to Christ, His interests will be ignored, and self-preservation will rule the day. His promises will give way to common sense.
My point is that everything of great value comes at great cost, and Jesus has already warned us that we must be prepared to pay the price if we are to become truly His. He who loses his life is the one who shall keep it. Just as a kernel of wheat must fall to the earth and die, our old self-sufficient life must die if we are ever to experience the reality of Christ in us, the hope of glory. Just as His body had to be broken for us, so our body of flesh must be broken for Him. Have you been broken? If not, will you allow God to do whatever it takes in you?
