What happened to the light that was to expel the darkness in our world?
Stop Blaming the Darkness
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me you may have peace.
In the world you shall have tribulation but be of good cheer.
I have overcome the world (John 16:33).
Whenever light shows up, the darkness is dispelled. It’s a law of physics and a law of life. The greater the darkness, the greater impact light has. Our world today has no shortage of darkness. It is becoming darker every day. Yet, darkness is simply doing what darkness does because lost people simply do what lost people do. If our world is becoming darker, the problem is not with the darkness, but with the light, or lack thereof.
We Are the Light
Members of the Church aren’t supposed to be the light of the word. We are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). We have the awesome responsibility of being the light bearers who have been appointed to bring the light of Christ where He has placed us. In announcing His own coming, Jesus said, “The people who live in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the shadowland of death, light has dawned” (Matt. 4:16).
Everywhere Jesus went, the darkness was dispelled. He showed His disciples the reality of the light He brought. It never failed. As God’s truth was boldly proclaimed, people were healed, hypocrisy was exposed, and sinners found forgiveness. The world was changed once the Father introduced His light through Jesus.
Today we look around and all we can see is darkness. When the darkness (especially in politics) is identified and discussed in the media, most of the popular personalities engage in endless discussion and pontificating about the evils of the darkness that has overtaken our nation and world. But to what end? All the rehashed jibber jabber accomplishes nothing. Why? Because, with a few exceptions, they offer no light because they, too, are in darkness.
Is Your Light Shining?
How about you? Do you spend more time complaining about the darkness than you do dispelling it with the light of Christ? All of us are surrounded by darkness, but we are responsible bringing a solution. That’s why we are here. So, how about you? Are you allowing the light of Christ within you to shine brightly, or have you kept it hidden (Matt. 5:15-16)? If so, why? Are you ashamed of the gospel? Is your love for Christ not worth sharing? Are you afraid? Perhaps you have not yet experienced the abundant and overflowing grace that accompanies the light.
Whatever the problem, please fix it. Jesus has already given you everything you need to carry out your primary mission—to dispel the darkness by bring the light of the gospel to those around you. If you really love Jesus, you will obey Him (John 14:15). Your ability to thrive in these dark days depends on our obedience to the One who holds your future in His hands.
Please allow Jesus to live His life through you, not in some mystical way, but in the reality that God has replaced your old life with the life of the resurrected Christ. By denying the flesh and walking in the Spirit, He will do through you what He did two thousand years ago. What are you waiting for?
