This edition looks at El Al”s unmatched safety measures, Israel”s new defense shield, the strings attached to the U.S. fighter plane offer to Israel, Palestinian alternatives to negotiations, the German Chancellor”s call for more Christianity, and the Revolutionary Communist Party USA”s  new North American Constitution.

OUR ISRAELI CONNECTION
In an earlier post (blog post 36, 1/9/100), I explained one of the main reasons why Israel”s El Al was the world”s safest airline. It is no coincidence that Tel Aviv”s Ben Gurion is the world”s safest airport. Earlier this year I experienced firsthand why this is the case. While I don”t look forward to repeating the experience in the near future, I did feel safe…very save. The Israel Project reports
A “multi-layered air defense network” that will protect the country against an Iranian nuclear bomb and shorter-range rockets from Syria and Hezbollah will be functional by 2015, Israeli officials said on Monday. The defense shield will combine “short-range rocket interceptors with kamikaze satellites that blow up ballistic missiles in space.” Several missile-shields will enable Israel to defend itself against possible attacks by Iran, Iran-backed Hezbollah, Syria and Palestinian terrorist groups. Iran is continuing its enrichment program and Israel fears it will acquire nuclear weapons, putting Israeli security at risk. Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi said there is a real possibility that “Hezbollah will take over Lebanon” by staging a military coup if the tribunal investigating the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri implicates Hezbollah members-as analysts predict it will.

Events are moving quickly in the Middle East. The U.S. is now offering Israel 20 state-of-the-art F-35 fighter planes for free (a $3 billion value) if Netanyahu”s government will agree to a 90 day moratorium on building settlements and further direct peace talks with the Palestinians.

IT’S NEWS TO ME

MEMRI reports
In light of the difficulties encountered in the direct negotiations with Israel and the pessimism among the Palestinians regarding the chances of making headway in these talks, the subject of alternatives to the negotiations has gained prominence in the Palestinian public agenda. Fatah Central Committee member Muhammad Dahlan said that the Palestinian leadership has formed a

committee to examine such alternatives, to be employed in case the U.S.  fails in its efforts to halt construction in the settlements. The alternatives being discussed are: on the diplomatic level, seeking a United Nations Security Council recognition of an independent Palestinian state, while circumventing the American power of veto; and taking steps against Israel, including a reassessment of the agreements already signed with it. On the level of action on the ground, an alternative frequently mentioned is intensifying the resistance, especially the unarmed popular resistance, as an exclusive policy or concurrently with the talks.

Vision to America reports
Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Germans debating Muslim integration to stand up more for Christian values, saying Monday the country suffered not from “too much Islam” but “too little Christianity.” Addressing her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, she said she took the current public debate in Germany on Islam and immigration very seriously. As part of this debate, she said last month that multiculturalism there had utterly failed. Some of her conservative allies have gone further, calling for an end to immigration from “foreign cultures” – a reference to Muslim countries like Turkey – and more pressure on immigrants to integrate into German society.

One Jerusalem reports
The Revolutionary Communist Party USA has announced a “Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America” and members say they are planning for a “revolution” against capitalism, with violence if necessary.  In fact, the “present capitalist-imperialist system” should be replaced with a “radically new economic system,” they say. Carl Dix, a founding member and spokesman, believes that the federal government bailouts, under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, are just one instance where

they propped up what he calls the “capitalist class.” His party is “building a

revolution” and under the proposed constitution all “natural resources [would] be collectively owned,” with the goal of a “classless, communist world,” he said.
